Effects of preoxygenation of PaO©üafter endotracheal suctioning

Abstract
This study was designed to prevent potential hypoxemia after endotracheal suctioning.
The main purposes of this study were to identify the recovery time of PaO2 to the preendotracheal suctioning state and the method to best minimize decreasing PaO2.
These were accomplished by comparing PaO2 before and after endotracheal suctioning.
This study was performed with 10 pediatric intensive. care patients, who were on mechanical ventilatory support postoperatively in the PICU (pediatric intensive care unit), Seoul National University Hospital from August 1, 1987 to September 30, 1987. Various concentrations of oxygen (FiO2=1.0, 0.5 and 0.21) were inhalated for 2min in random order with and without hyperinflation prior to a losec endotracheal suctioning of the patients who had been on IPPB with FiO2 of 0.5 had IPPB with FiO2 of 0.5 after reapplied suctioning. Post-suction PaO2 at 30sec, lmin, 2min, 5tnin, 10min, and 25min were checked anaerobically. All of the data was analyzed by percentage, t-test, and paired t-test (P<0.05)
The results of this study were as follows:
1. PaO2 in the group receiving FiO2 of 1.0 was higher than those in the group receiving FiO2 of 0.5 and 0.21 after endotracheal suctioning.
2. No significant differences were found in PaO2 between hyperinflated and tidal ventilated groups.
3. An increase in PaO2 was most prominant at Msec post-station. Recovery times of PaO2 to the pre-suction period were 2min in the group receiving FiO2 of 1.0 and 0. 21, and 1 min in the group receiving FiO2 0. 5.
